Devil's Postpile - Rainbow Fall 2 miles loop with elevation profile
On the top of Devil's Postpile (2.300m or 7,546ft) - the columnar basalt formation. As basalt lava erupts from volcanic vents and cools, it shrinks and then cracks. Sometimes vertical columns will form. These well-developed columns formed as homogenous lava cooled at a uniform rate. Column tops were polished by pased glaciers.
Impressive Devil's Postpile National Monument... The Postpile's columns average 2 feet (0.61 m) in diameter, the largest being 3.5 feet (1.1 m), and many are up to 60 feet (18 m) long
Another angle of Devil's Postpile... John Muir and Pacific Crest trails are passing this area. The 211-mile-long John Muir Trail links Yosemite and Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Parks. The Pacific Crest Trail goes from Canada to Mexico.
The Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River plunges 101 feet over a cliff of volcanic rock forming Rainbow Fall (2.255m or 7,398ft).
