  • On the top of Devil's Postpile (2.300m or 7,546ft) - the columnar basalt formation.
As basalt lava erupts from volcanic vents and cools, it shrinks and then cracks. Sometimes vertical columns will form. These well-developed columns formed as homogenous lava cooled at a uniform rate. Column tops were polished by pased glaciers.
